Who are you?

I am Jochem Brandsma, 23 years old and I am mainly active as producer and director for livestreams and video productions. At Budgetcam I work part-time as a planner and I also have my own company, Unbound Media, with which I do livestreaming and video productions.

How was the commercial born?

At the time, Budgetcam had put out a call for all employees to present a concept for a commercial that would fit the company's core target audience. With that and some additional information, I wrote and delivered a treatment where I felt the characteristics of the company and the target audience would stand out. After a few weeks, I finally received an email confirming that I would be doing the commercial!

The deadline was tight, but with the right crew, preparation and tremendous help from the location Studio Top III Productions, we were finally able to come up with a workable plan to film the commercial in 1 day. The crew consisted of 4 people: Rudnisky Gambier, Rickert Brandsma, Budgetcam colleague/ multitasker Rans Martina and myself.

On the day itself we used a tight schedule and shot list to make all the crucial shots and eventually also took some time and space to shoot some on-the-spot shots with the gear we had brought for the commercial.

What was the goal of the commercial?

The aim of the advertisement was to appeal to the young creator (core group of Budgetcam), since nowadays creatives are more and more multitaskers, we let the same creators do various shoots and projects using the gear from Budgetcam.

This gave the gear a leading role in the story of the commercial. Furthermore, in the visual language of the commercial we chose to keep a high contrast look that fits the look that we often see in the makers of Budgetcam. However, due to limitations, we had to make our concept with a small crew and a shortened shooting period. Therefore, there are elements that we had to delete from the commercial. Unfortunately, it is what it is and we had to make some compromises that diluted the concept of the commercial. Nevertheless, we are very proud of the result!

What equipment did you use?

- Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (2x)

- Canon 24-70 F/2.8 (2x)

- Aputure 120D II (3x)

- Aputure Light Dome II

- Aputure Lantern

- Rookmachine

- C-stands (4x)

Do you have tips for makers that wanna make commercials?

Start in broad strokes and eventually get down to the details. A simple start with a general description of the feeling or look of what you want to achieve is often enough to spark the rest (shots, locations, edit ideas, etc.) in the process. Always keep the vision of the story in mind, this can be of the brand or of the target audience.
